“Second lieutenant, I realize that your position is unusual, but she’s not going. We don’t even have a name for her.” The more the alien pushed, the more Cross distrusted her.

“What’s a name?” the alien female asked.

Major Newman and his wife joined the discussion. “Did she ask what a name is?” Grace asked.

Cross scowled. More idealists not thinking clearly.

Newman chuckled. “Cross keeps getting darker and darker. What’s going on?”

Grace leaned against Peter with her back to him, and he had his arms wrapped around her. Peter had the gifts of an angel, and shouldn’t involve himself in the alien woman’s cause. She was bad news.

Captain Cross shook his head. “We can’t take the alien woman with us. It’s a bad idea all around.”

He understood that his coworkers were naïve. But their naïveté shot up to an unrealistic level when Major Newman said with a shrug, “She wants to go. And I say we call her ‘Kate’. This alien woman has a mind of her own. Somehow the name fits her.”

Grace elbowed her husband. “We’ll let her choose her own name. She’s not a pet. Let’s get on the shuttle.”

Captain Cross watched his friends board with the alien. She shouldn’t be going back to the Zoastra. She smelled and looked like trouble.
