Rosemarie made him laugh. “The general is a lucky man.”

“Thank you, Cross. I hope I didn’t hurt you.” Her eyes were sweet and childlike.

Winking at her, he reminded her. “Don’t worry about me. A woman on every planet works for me.”

“Liar. You are so much deeper than that.”

Him? No. He’d shoot first and ask questions later. “If you say so, Rosemarie.”

Rosemarie was always his friend, and sure he thought that she was adorable. Every guy on the ship did. But she dated the general and, honestly, her optimism would irritate him long term. He preferred life on his own.

“Look how happy they are.” She jabbed him in the shoulder and pointed to the Newmans. “I’m still happy that I helped him propose.”

Cross hadn’t approved much of Peter Newman until his fiancée arrived on the ship. Grace became a game-changer in his life, when she struck up an interest in him and lent him her observations. No woman had seemed so genuine to him in ages.

But he knew the story of how Peter begged Rosemarie to help him propose to his long-time girlfriend. Considering that Peter proposed within hours of Grace’s arrival on the Zoastra made her off limits fast.

Rosemarie’s pretense as a gold digger still made the ship roar. Everyone found it funny, because of who her parents were. She’d never need money. She’d never be in space at all if not for General Aurelius. But Grace hadn’t been on the ship for more than a few days before she became Major Grace Newman.
