A Day in the Life of Marine Captain Cross before the Zoastra Part Two

“You were not the only one to suffer that day. I lost everything too.”

“What do you need?” He didn’t have time for this woman, or the past.

“It’s my son and his needs.”

“Your son? Did you get married or pregnant, Jeannie?” Being polite when he stopped caring about anyone must have been embedded in his brain. Why would she call him about her son?

“No. After what happened, I wanted to die with everyone else too. But I’ve adopted young Lucas―”

Lucas. His unfaithful wife’s boy. “Jeannie, stop,” Cross interrupted. “I don’t want to talk about him.”

“Oui. I need something with Maria’s DNA, Alain. I wouldn’t call you if I wasn’t desperate.”

Cross had never liked looking back. His wife left him for another man. No matter how much he tried to please her, she’d left him. His son was not his own, but someone with another man’s DNA.

He’d joined EarthSeekers to get away. Being at the Academy when the bomb destroyed everyone in his life changed him. He’d be dead as well if he’d chosen to stay home, as his parents begged him to do. Leaving to get away from his cheating wife made him feel like a coward. He worked hard to forget the past. She was dead, like everyone he ever knew that mattered.

Frequently Asked Questions

How did the bombing affect Marine Captain Cross in the Zoastra Affair?

Captain Alain Cross was at the Academy when a bomb destroyed everyone in his life, including his wife and son. Surviving only because he had left home to escape his cheating wife, Cross was deeply changed by the tragedy. The guilt of leaving, combined with the loss, drove him to join EarthSeekers and bury his painful past.

What does Jeannie want from Captain Cross in Part Two of A Day in the Life?

Jeannie contacts Captain Cross urgently requesting something containing Maria’s DNA. She has adopted young Lucas, the son of Cross’s unfaithful wife Maria, and she is desperate enough to reach out to Cross despite their painful shared history. Cross is reluctant, as the boy represents a past betrayal — Lucas was not biologically his son.

Is Captain Cross dealing with personal trauma or professional conflict in the Zoastra Affair prequel?

Captain Cross faces primarily personal trauma in this prequel story. His struggles center on his wife’s infidelity, the son who wasn’t his, and the bomb that killed everyone he loved. While he is a Marine captain affiliated with EarthSeekers, the conflict in this scene is emotional — confronting a past he has worked hard to forget.
