Her voice woke him up every day too. Her place was here, on the ship. And he’d get her back. Peter looked visibly shaken.

Aurelius added, “They had mannerisms of ancient Romans, but something different and more diplomatic. I’ll let you know my plan to get them back soon. Prepare the shuttle, captain…Major Newman can help you.”

Cross nodded and left the flight deck. Brigadier General Aurelius studied and planned. Any information or strategy the general put together, he’d follow. But Cross needed to shoot his gun―he didn’t care at who. Getting the women back mattered, especially his few female friends, Grace and Rosemarie.

Good, solid women were necessary for world order. Even if he’d never have one of his own.

Captain Cross walked Major Newman out the door. Aurelius told Second Lieutenant Rex Gaynor, another friend, “Get Colonel Hunter to the flight deck. His absence has already been already noted.”

“Aye, sir.”

The airlock closed. At least they were spared the sight of Hunter, thought Cross. The man stank of cowardice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Captain Cross react to the women being taken in the Zoastra Affair?

Captain Cross reacts with determination and barely contained aggression. He follows Brigadier General Aurelius’s lead for strategy but personally needs to take action — as the narrative puts it, he needed to shoot his gun and didn’t care at who. Getting the women back, especially his friends Grace and Rosemarie, is his primary motivation.

What is Rosemarie’s significance to the crew in the Zoastra Affair?

Rosemarie holds a uniquely important place aboard the ship. She is the creator’s daughter, Aurelius’s girlfriend, and described as the general sweetheart of every crew member. Her voice wakes the crew each day, making her presence on the ship both emotionally and functionally essential, which intensifies the urgency of rescuing her.

Is Brigadier General Aurelius or Captain Cross more in control of the rescue plan in Part Six?

Brigadier General Aurelius holds clear command of the rescue strategy in Part Six. He studies, plans, and issues orders, including directing Cross to prepare the shuttle with Major Newman’s help. Cross defers to Aurelius’s information and strategy, though Cross provides the aggressive, action-oriented execution the mission will require.
