A Day in the Life of Marine Captain Cross before the Zoastra Affair Part Twenty
A rock flew out of one of the caves. The crew aimed their weapons. And Cross held his breath. Telling Grace that he didn’t save her husband wouldn’t be a fun conversation. The first person out was the gray-faced alien…but she had her arms behind her head. Cross breathed easier when a moment later Newman and his men walked out.
“She’s alone,” Newman said.
Women never travel alone. Cross called out, “You’re sure?”
“Yeah. We’re sure.”
Newman looked certain, but Cross held his gun a fraction of a second longer. The gray alien woman looked scared. But then, who knew for sure how to read an alien’s face?
Newman walked her closer to the encampment. “She’s seen my wife.”
He pushed her forward, indicating that she should speak. “The Earth women have caused a war.”
Cross crossed his arms around his chest. “How did they do that so fast?”
Newman pushed the alien forward again. Clearly, the woman didn’t want to speak out loud. “Repeat what you told us.”
She cried out softly, then spoke. “Our king has an exceptionally small male organ, and the dark one laughed at him to his face. Other women who heard the exchange agreed that men should be bigger and stronger than us― including under the belt.”
Cross rolled his eyes. “Southeastern’s humor. Hope that girl didn’t get the rest of them in trouble.”
“The men seemed embarrassed with the king. I worked in the kitchen for the past two years, and the place smelled too dangerous for me. I came here to the woods scouting for a safe place to wait it out,” the alien woman finished.
Cross pointed his gun at her. “And you followed us. Why?”
“I wanted us to know more about the men on your planet.”
Cross stared at her. Was she kidding? She wanted to flirt? The woman wasn’t cute. Despite her the fact that she was a prisoner, she reeked of arrogance. “You’re leading us to our shipmates,” he commanded.
The woman looked down. Cross waited until she submitted before he looked away. She turned her head and walked toward the map.
He put his gun down. But he still didn’t trust her.

Frequently Asked Questions
How did the Earth women start a war in the Zoastra Affair?
In The Zoastra Affair, the Earth women triggered a war when one of them — referred to as ‘the dark one’ — laughed at the alien king’s small male organ directly to his face. Other women present agreed that men should be physically larger and stronger. The king’s embarrassment among his men created a dangerously volatile situation at the palace.
What is the gray alien woman’s role in Part Twenty of the Zoastra Affair?
The gray-faced alien woman is a former kitchen worker who fled the king’s palace because it had become too dangerous. She was scouting the woods for a safe place to wait out the conflict when she followed Captain Cross and his crew. Cross forces her to lead them to their missing shipmates, though he remains distrustful of her motives.
Should Captain Cross trust the alien woman who followed his crew in the Zoastra Affair?
Cross chooses not to fully trust the alien woman, despite her apparent compliance. Although she surrendered peacefully and provided useful intelligence about the conflict at the palace, Cross noted her arrogance and found her reason for following them — wanting to learn about Earth men — suspicious. He keeps his guard up and forces her cooperation rather than accepting it freely.
