A Day in the Life of Marine Captain Cross before the Zoastra Affair Part Fourty
Communications closed off. The ships chasing them turned around. Captain Cross held his breath until they left his imaging field.
Aurelius told Second Lieutenant Rex Gaynor, “Back on course.”
Cross waited. He knew that General Aurelius had a larger plan for him to move up in rank. The ship remained safe. The mission to find the world of the aliens who populated the Earth and contributed to humanity’s DNA remained. The quest drove humanity like somehow some aliens in the universe possessed a God gene.

The next morning, Cross woke up alone. He needed to get something off his chest. Perhaps the crew had become his new family. He wasn’t sure, but he’d go on a six-month mission soon. He needed to wrap up the past.
He put his shirt on, covering his abs, and dialed communication. “Can you call back Jeannie Francois Valieure?”
Lieutenant Mortlock answered him, “It’s two o’clock in the morning in Montreal.”
“I’ll leave her a message, then. What I have to tell her won’t take a minute.”
“Poor girl…you break too many hearts, Cross. I’ll patch you through.”
Mortlock had no idea. His former sister-in-law and his past needed to stay in the past.
Two rings past.
