A Day in the Life of Marine Captain Cross before the Zoastra Affair Part Sixteen

Cross froze his face not intending to smile. He had a reputation for grimacing. The conversation needed to steer their conversation in another direction. “Countries are just lines on a map, anyhow. Just as places are tiny specks on the planets.”

Major Newman changed topics suddenly. “Did you get a terrain spec before we left?”

Work. Good. “Knew I forgot something.” Major Newman’s look of shock cracked him up. Cross pulled out the spec. At least he didn’t have to change conversations and be obvious. “Forest landing seemed closest to where the general believed that your wife and the other women are.”

“Any idea how he even knew?”

“No.” Good question.

Newman leaned closer, like he was sharing a secret. Cross felt intrigued and leaned in as well. Newman didn’t disappoint. “I wasn’t on the flight deck, but there’s a rumor that Colonel Hunter was taken into custody. If that man put my wife in danger out of payback, I’m going to kill him.”

“I’ll help you if that’s true.” Cross looked up. He meant what he’d said, but he wouldn’t help Major Peter Newman out of vengeance. Even though he thought of Newman as a friend. Grace deserved respect. Women like her were far and few. She should be defended.

“When we get back, I’m going to find out. I want Grace back first.”

On the planet, every man had to be focused and alert. “Don’t think about Hunter right now.”

“Hard not too.”

Frequently Asked Questions

How did Major Newman find out where his wife was being held in the Zoastra Affair?

In the Zoastra Affair, the general provided intelligence on the location of Major Newman’s wife and the other women. A forest landing was identified as the closest point to their believed location. Newman also heard a rumor that Colonel Hunter had been taken into custody, suggesting Hunter may have played a role in putting the women in danger.

What is the relationship between Marine Captain Cross and Major Newman in the Zoastra Affair?

Captain Cross and Major Newman share a friendship built on mutual respect and trust. Cross considers Newman a friend and openly states he would help him confront Colonel Hunter if Hunter endangered Newman’s wife Grace. However, Cross distinguishes between helping out of friendship and helping out of pure vengeance, showing his principled character.

Is Captain Cross or Major Newman more focused on the mission versus personal matters during the rescue?

Captain Cross is the more mission-focused of the two. He redirects conversations away from personal grievances, reminds Newman not to think about Colonel Hunter while on the planet, and emphasizes that every man must stay alert. Newman, understandably, struggles to separate his concern for his wife Grace from the operational demands of the rescue mission.
