OCTOBER

Alice and I… possibly friends? Probably not.

Oct 14, 2016 Part 5

Weight: 118

Ate: nothing

Drank: delicious nonfat latte still tasty on my lips

Sex: Soon probably

Vicki checked her watch.

I finished my latte and glanced around the bookstore with the coffee shop inside. How many hours did we spend here as teenagers? Vicki was always looking to stay away from her family. I was always angling for an invite over.

And Alice was always reminding us to do our homework.

I blinked. How had I forgotten that? I sat back in my chair like I had no cares in the world for these few minutes and smiled. “This feels nice.”

Vicki also seemed to be looking at the reference books that might never have changed that stared at them as she said, “Meeting at the bookstore again feels surreal.”

I held my empty cup up like I’d salute her with it and nodded. “Like we’re teenagers again.”

She laughed and finished her drink as well. Once done, she said, “It’s been along time.”

From the window I glanced over and pointed toward the short haired dark blonde woman that barreled down the street. I stood and said, “Here comes Alice.”

“She’s in a hurry.” Vicki said.

I threw my cup in the trash and headed toward the door again. The Italian guy was no where to be seen, but Alice’s face was contorted as I said,  “That’s the speed of someone being chased.”

“You think?” Vicki asked as she joined her.

I took out my phone and pressed my designer heels into the green carpet as I said, “Yeah.”

Then I pressed video.

If anything bad happened, I needed it documented. Vicki stepped forward and hugged her friend as she said, “Are you okay?”

“Now. I’m here with you both.” Alice walked to the window and looked out.

I caught the faces of the guys who disappeared with my phone camera until they were out of sight.

Across the street I noticed the Italian guy. I turned off my phone and turned into the store with Vicki and Alice as Vicki asked, “Who was that?”

Alice wiped her hands on her pants. “I don’t know. Some guy was following me.”

Right. Good. I nodded and put my phone back in my bag. However my mind rang. I could call Rafe. He’d be able to find out who Mr. Italian was, even if Alice didn’t want to track down the men who’d followed her as I made the offer. “I have it on video from my phone. I’ll text it to John and Peter. The guy chasing you had a cap on.”

Alice’s eyes widened. “You saw him?”

“I couldn’t make anything out, but perhaps the police can. I hate stalkers.” I said and crossed my arms. Perhaps Alice and I could work on being friends. Anything was possible. But then I glanced down at her and said, “You smell like sex.”

Alice turned bright red. I probably shouldn’t have brought it up, but it seemed so obvious.
