OCTOBER

I’ll find her. I swear it.

Oct 14, 2016 Part 13

Weight: 118

Ate: nothing

Drank: water in my mad drive

Sex: No

Peter’s car was gone from the driveway.

Goosebumps on my arm told me I was too late, but I headed inside.

The maid let me in and it wasn’t Caro.

I wish it was. I need some friends right now, but I made my way up the stairs I’ve walked thousands of times in my life.

The house was chilled from air conditioning but nothing else.

Once I made it to his bedroom, the air smelled like the musty smell of sex with an overly floral scent that made my nose itch.

This wasn’t good and I knew how Peter smelled. I knew his sweat had been here, in his bedroom.

And his almond like smell was mixed with sex.

My stomach churned, but I walked over to the empty bed and stared at the rumpled white sheets I’d slept in last night.

This wasn’t good. I couldn’t swallow without the smell of Ms. Bad Underwear washing down my throat.

I called out and sighed as I said to the empty room with a Money hanging on the wall. “Peter?”

“He’s gone.” Caro said from the side door.

I turned toward the servant entrance and my eyes were glassy. I’d not cry here. This wasn’t my place. I held it back to save for later. For now I let out a sigh and crossed my arms.

A shuffle of feet caught my attention. I turned and met the brown eyed gaze of Caro Soliz.

Tears formed in my eyes. I wish her brother Rafe was here. He’d know how to solve this mystery.

I let out a long sigh and met the gaze of his little sister as I asked, “Caro, what do you know about Ms. Cheap Underwear?”

Caro averted her gaze as she held a mop and bucket. “I don’t want to get involved in my bosses personal life and then get fired.”

Fair. The Soliz family was frugal. Pilar raised her two children, paid for their college education all while she scrubbed floors for a living.

Part of me always wished Pilar was my mother instead of my own. I wiped a tear that escaped out of my eyes and sniffled. Then I said, “Caro, you’re like my little sister. I’d help you…”

Caro’s face went red. She swallowed and looked down at her feet. “Look, Peter went to work and I have to get going.”

Caro backed into the shadows of the servant’s entrance. My heart raced and I chased her. Before she disappeared down the stairs, I called out, “Wait.”

Caro crossed her arms and stared at me with her big brown eyes. “Don’t make me lose my job.”

Fair. The Soliz family was the closest thing I had to family too. I nodded but followed her on the stairs as I asked, “Did your brother Rafe leave for Vegas yet?”

She sniffed the air and glanced away, rubbing her forehead. “His flight is in four hours.”

Rafe had access to science. DNA took down the President in the 1990s when they found his semen on a dress. One of the funniest days of high school ran in my head, but if they can trace semen, they can trace a woman’s DNA too. I’d need a lab.

But I couldn’t tell Caro. So I simply asked, “Can you leave me here for a few minutes?”

Caro clutched her heart, but then nodded at me. Good. I had one chance to find out who Ms. Bad Underwear was and this was it.
