As I pulled into the police station, I saw Rafe still in his Jeep. I gathered the sheets and ignored the beat in my heart.
Rafe was classically handsome with those big brown eyes of his that had a devilish tint, even though underneath those muscles off his, we both knew he was 100% an angel.
His good guy moral code was why we never worked out. I needed his protection in high school and then I gained his family who showed me what people who love each other lived.
For that I owed him.
Not that I’d ever tell him that. I trekked to his door and handed him the bag of sheets as I said, “I hope your trip to Vegas for the bachelor party is fun. You need fun.”
“It’s for Joe’s bachelor party. You know I’d never go anywhere called sin city.”
“I’m not judging. In fact I’m happy you’re going to cut loose and have a good time.”
“Hmm.” He glanced inside the bag and shook his head. “Want to tell me why I’m running bedsheets?”
“I can’t.” I said and showed him my overbite with my lower lip that went under the upper teeth that the dentist never corrected. My mother hadn’t wanted him to ruin my singing voice. “I’ll need you to trust me.”
“Trust… that’s a stretch Jenny. I’m doing this as a favor.” He opened his jeep and got out, holding my bag in his hand as he said, “And I need to be fast because if I insisted on an answer, you’ll take days to explain it all and I have to get going. When I get back, we’ll talk.”
I wrapped my arms around him and kissed his cheek. Rafe still made me feel safe and protected, but neither one of us were in high school anymore. I let him go as I said, “Thank you Rafe. I owe you.”
“Don’t worry about it.” He said and waved me off. “I expect your answer soon.”
I called out behind him. “I’ll always talk to you. I know you have my back, as always.”
He winked at me and then turned the corner. I lost sight of him and headed back to my car.
I clicked it on and let the cool air conditioning cool me down.
Soon. I started the engine to leave, but I knew without a doubt, I’d have my answers.
Rafe was the most dependable man I ever met and he gave me his word.
If he had the results while he was in a strip club in Vegas celebrating Joe’s bachelor party as was the men’s plans, he’d go outside and give me a call.
One day, somehow I’d give him more than I’ve taken. But for now I headed home.
I needed a shower to wash out my nerves that still twinged with what I’d done.
